Having celebrated Earth Day on Friday, it seems a good time to talk about natural ways to fight bugs, weeds, and fungus in our yards. Did you know that vinegar has many uses in the garden and is not harmful to our environment? Instead of grabbing a store bought bottle for garden chores next time, rethink, grab some vinegar....nice and cheap....and give it a try on many tasks that may surprise you!
- full strength vinegar can kill weeds. Be sure to get it only on the plants you want DEAD! Great for the cracks in sidewalks and driveways without being harmful to pets or children.
- 1 cup vinegar to 1 cup water adds needed acidity to azaleas, rhododendrons, hydrangeas and gardenias
- full strength vinegar and a hard brush will scrub the birdbath clean and not leave harmful residue like soaps can
- rinsing your hands with vinegar after working in the garden can eliminate skin irritation
- one part vinegar to one part water will kill slugs
- to keep rabbits away from your garden, soak a cotton ball in vinegar, place it in a film canister with a hole poked in the top. Place several around your garden.
- clean your hummingbird feeders with vinegar instead of harmful soap and water
- use full strength vinegar to scrub the mold from pots
