Glass Etching-A Quick Tutorial

I'm helping a couple moms at our grade school create some fun gifts for our teachers to celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week.  I decided to try glass etching.  It was super easy!

I decided on a butterfly, so I used my Cricut to cut a butterfly onto vinyl.  This will be the template.  Then the negative of the vinyl gets adhered to the glass.

You'll need Glass Etching Cream, found in the stained glass aisle at your hobby store.  I was surprised at the price, $8.00 for this small bottle, but it doesn't take much to get the effect you want.

The directions say to paint it on thick and leave for five minutes.  Then rinse with warm water.

So hard to get a photo without glare on glass, but this isn't too bad.  The few round spots on the bottom right wing I think may have been from a few bubbles, so make sure you don't leave any of those.  But all in all, it turned out pretty well.  I think next time I may leave it on a little longer and see if the etching darkens.

Super easy.  Give it a try!  Remember you can always find super cheap glass items at your thrift stores or the dollar store!!

  1. Hi, Cherie! I love the etched butterfly. That's a great teacher gift! I've etched glass once (at a MOPS meeting) and it was lots of fun...but kind of nerve wracking to make sure it was just right. You did a great job. :)

Visiting from The Stories of A 2 Z! Hope you'll stop by my blog to say hi. :)
