Conquering our Finances with Financial Peace University

If you've been a reader of my blog for very long, I have confessed that I am horrible with money!  My Husband and I have struggled through this for years. Neither one of us ever cared to give budgeting the time and discipline needed to make it work, so we just didn't.  We've wasted a lot of money over the years in overdraft fees and finance charges simply because we weren't paying attention.

Recently some good friends of ours took a class at our church and said we absolutely needed to go.  We've been attending Financial Peace University by Dave Ramsey for seven weeks now and I can't believe the change!  We certainly aren't making any more money than we had been before, but we are budgeting and using the cash envelope system.  My most surprising aspect of this whole thing is that I don't want to spend money out of my envelopes because I don't like them to be empty!  We've paid off a couple of small credit cards and are now working on some larger debt that I can't wait to get out from under.  It does require making some difficult choices at times, but I've never had the discipline before to be able to face the choices head on.  It is so nice to have a group keeping us accountable and helping us through every step of this process.

If you've ever looked for a financial system, I highly recommend this class.  Check out their website for information on where you can find the class near you.

  2. When my husband and I were engaged, he gave me a copy of Financial Peace. I had a car loan and multiple credit cards. After doing a budget and following the envelopes, we paid off all of my debt. 10 years and 3 kids later, I'm not nearly as disciplined as I used to be but have been convicted recently to start it up again.

    Love your blog!

  3. Me too and Us too............and we feel off the wagon but are starting up again. I am the spender, my hubby the non spender but not saver!!! I some days want to post the journey but fear of exposing keeps me from writing. Will be praying for you and your hubby and that Dave can bring us all together as one being stewards together with God's gifts!

  4. I've never attended FPU though I did attend Crown Financial Seminar in 2008 and a small group study a few months later. That was the push I needed to start.

It's is not an easy journey but it so worth it. I've been using the cash envelope system for more than two years now. In that period, I've paid off over $6,000 in debt, retired the car loan, moved to a bigger place, etc all on one income.

I kinda fell off the last couple of months but I'm still credit card debt free (thank God). I plan to get back on it.
